Power cables, power banks recalled due to fire risk
Two products that may be in or around your office are subject to safety recalls. A mains cable and a power bank have been recalled as they may present fire hazards.
Acer has joined the recall of Linetek LS-15 power cables that may overheat in use, leading to potential fire or burn hazards.
The cables were supplied by Acer between September 2010 and March 2015 with notebooks branded Acer, Gateway and eMachines.
LS-15 cables have already been recalled by Lenovo, Toshiba and HP.
Affected cables can be identified by the "LS-15" model number moulded into the female connector.
Acer customers can use this page to determine whether their computer qualifies for a free replacement cable.
As for the recalled power banks (auxiliary batteries for mobile devices such as smartphones), the model concerned was the Yatama PB017 which Virgin Mobile gave to some customers as part of its loyalty program .
These power banks may contain a manufacturing defect that may cause overheating, leading to a fire hazard.
Since the item was a freebie, there is no replacement program. Owners are advised to stop using it immediately, and dispose of the power bank and its cable responsibly.
The ACCC has not yet mentioned any recall of the Yatama PB017 from sources other than Virgin Mobile, but if you do have one from another source it would seem sensible to avoid using it until you know it is safe.
